UWCSEA Skills and Qualities

For skills and qualities from our school, I think we are going good for being resilient as despite arguing a lot, we also come together as a team and work out problems and whenever we aare at a dead end, we don't give up but keep on trying. It also relates to being critical thinker and communicating as we need these to develop us more to be part of the group. I also think that we are being principled as when some of our members could not do their homework because they were busy or anything else, they don't hide it but just say that they weren't able to do it and will do it as homework. I definately think that we should be honest if we did something wrong or didn't do homework because it is better to just admitt it and forget it rather than coming up with lies and excuses. I think that our group improved on collaboration but still needs to work on it.

Thoughts on Exhibition Posters

In class we have started to discuss about our posters and what we should and shouldn't include on our poster. I think the most important thing is Contrast, Alignment, Repetition and Proximity or CARP for short. CARP is something really good to think about because you get a good idea of how your poster should come together at the end. I feel that one of the more important things to think about is contrast. I think this because if your contrast is off people might not find your poster appealing therefore not come to your stall.

video
This is my Video about how my group used MISO

This struck me when I watched this video

The Video

When I watched this particular part of this video I felt that some of us are not full with respect and are a little bit inhuman. This person made a comment about migrant construction workers. “We let them work here, but they create trouble instead. They should go back to China.” Something that I found really interesting about the migrant worker that responded to the comment was he did not feel bad he said something like this "This statement is correct. Only if we caused a lot of trouble and did not let the people be in peace here. This statement is wrong because we do not trouble the people here and we do not create a lot of chaos. So there are two sides to this argument."
Connecting to the Little India riot many people wrote comments about the people who were included in the riot not every Indian/Bangladeshi worker.
This part also struck me because there was a lot of racism here because one person commented said "They are smelly and they always stare at me. I do not feel safe at all." The response was something like this " I just came to Singapore to work. When some Singaporeans see my face they get scared. But the people here in Singapore are nice Singapore is also a good place. When I read this comment its like I don't know Singaporeans." When I listed and watched that part of the video I felt that we need to take action because there is a very big misunderstanding between Singaporeans and migrant workers. If this becomes more extreme this can lead to serious conflict.
When I read the positive comments I felt that there are some people that care for people that do so much for us. One of the migrant workers felt so much more comforted because of the positive comment the person wrote. Another Migrant worker had stayed in Singapore for 8 years and he liked Singapore that much which influenced him to stay 5 more years in Singapore.

In conclusion some people think migrant workers as very bad people because they might have seen a few cases of migrant workers not doing the right thing. But not every migrant worker is bad if that person or those people have done this thing doesn't make every migrant worker bad. Some comments made migrant workers feel good because they comforted migrant workers or they complimented them in a way. A migrant worker has been influenced by peoples actions to stay longer in Singapore.

Reflecting on UWCSEA skills and qualities

Ok, this is a blog post that will state my opinion on how I have been progressing on the UWCSEA Learner profile.
I think me and my group are progressing pretty well on self-manager because we got all of our tasks done and we can organize our time quite well. An example of this is that we alway got our homework done and we have not really run out of time that much.
I also think that we improved in resilience because we didn't give up when we found one of the questions hard due to lack of resources concerning that question. However, we can improve quite a bit in both these Skills and qualities. We can improve in Self-Managing by perhaps using schedules, we could improve in resilience by trying out self-talking.So, all in all, I believe that me and my group have improved in both Self-Manging and Resilience. I think that because of the reasons listed above.

How to Resolve and Avoid Conflict

What To Do With Your Information(Vlog)

Field trip

Last Monday, on Labour day, my Exhibition group and I went to the Sama-Sama event where the migrant workers live and we thought if we went there, we could know more about them. Our purpose of going there to interview migrant workers for our 3 essential questions which were what are the role that migrant workers play in our community, what are the perspective about the issue (locally) and how do organisations help migrant workers and also other questions to understand more deeply into the inquiry. We were able to see the art Exhibition that were held there and throught the Exhibition, I have learnt that migrant workers might act as constrution or domestic workers in our thinking but they have also another career like a poet, doctor and etc. We were also able to get a tour around the migrant workers dorminaotry and getting notes from the guid. Unfortunately we didn't get to interview the migrant workers, we were able to get notes and information that could help us for the inquire and glad that we made the choice to go to the event.

Our plans to take Action

Right now our group is in a stage of, sorting out our information and taking action. Somethings I think our group needs to think of is our sphere of influence (A Sphere of influence is, something that you can do and/or can not do). I think that because all our group is thinking of is BIG, for example, creating an organisation, changing the laws, and so on, however, we can't do that because it is not in our sphere of influence. Even though our group still is thinking "BIG",  I think we did a great job narrowing it down to things that are in our sphere of influence, such as:

Sphere of Influence
  • TRY to start off with getting 10 signatures agree with migrant workers having a better place to live in, then we try 20, 50, 100, 150 all the way to 1,000 signatures
  • We can raise awareness
  • Join a NGO to help migrant workers
  • Donate (time, money, etc)

My Research:Nikhil

Since we're almost done with researching I thought it would be a good idea to write a post on my research. My research gave me other perspectives on my topic. The funny part was that I never knew that there were other perspectives on my topic. The research does not only help educate you on whatever you're researching but also it builds your confidence to share about your topic. The reason it builds confidence is because you feel like you know more about your topic, more than other people. I think having confidence is important in exhibition because I can tell that how and what you present is vital.

The way our group is collaborating

The way our group is collaborating now is much better. We hardly have any arguments, we don’t just misundersand what one is saying, instead we try to understand what the person In our group is saying.

Today instead of arguing we got a whole load of work done, the things that we got done were planning to interview migrant workers and also to organise the information that we have already found. Our group might have conflict mainly when we need to decide, but when we have conflict we know we are thinking and also putting our perspective into this pirticular thing.

To summarise what I have talked about we have not had many arguments and Instead of arguing we got more work done. We know that conflict is good because we show that we are thinking.

Collaboration

I think our group was doing quite well on collaboration because during exhibition today, we worked together quite well and did not argue at all. Also, we actually got a lot done during that period of time, which requires collaboration, otherwise you'd just have a bunch of people yelling at each other.

However, we can still improve a lot in collaborating. I think that because we sometimes disagree, then arguing starts. This is probably because of a difference in opinions and no one is willing to back down. That kind of scenario can be avoided by learning to compromise more.

The way I have used UWC learner profiles

The three UWC learner profiles that I have been focusing on are: taking on a variety of goals and encourage my group members to do so too. I will stand up against wrong doing and work towards solving the problem. I will seek help when I need it.

I regularly use taking on a variety of goals and encourage my group members to do so too. Because normally we would need to do different jobs so we can feel how it is do a particular job. Some people might want to do the same job but anyway everyone will get a turn eventually. I have stood up against wrong doing and solving the problem, because once two of my group members had a small conflict and I helped out bit so they could all of us could solve the problem. I need to work on seeking help whenever I need it because sometimes I needed help but I didn't ask for anyone to help me but instead I tried to figure it out myself, but eventually I asked for help.

Group with collaboration

This week, I think that our group collaborated well because we didn't have any conflicts or arguments. However, we should really think of our actions that puts the group in a well and in a not well position in order to make our collaboration more achievable. I think we should keep building our collaboration up to be more successful in our Exhibition.

Sama Sama the Event

On labour day, my Exhibition group and I went to an event that is about, showing that migrant workers have a purpose they are just not any random construction worker. In the event, it showed that Migrant Workers are creative, just like us and have a purpose. From this event, I learnt that migrant workers can be a doctor, poet, a friend, gardener and much more. From this event, I learned that migrant workers have a purpose and can do anything just like us. Something that really inspired me was this quote that a migrant worker made and it was, “I have always wondered what heaven is like”.

This is the quote

The colorful baskets are made by locals and foreign workers, and it was an organisation.

How I have been using the UWC learner profiles

Perspective:Nikhil

I think this issue is a very complicated one because there are very different perspectives. One perspective is that since migrant workers are from  different countries they don't belong in our country. Another is that we should support migrant workers because they contribute a lot to our country. The last perspective is the perspective of the migrant workers who simply think that they need to do what they can to support their family. Because of these perspectives either bad things or good things may happen to the migrant workers.
